Project 3 Sketches

Project 3 Photos (Box)

Project 3 Description

For this project the BDS 102 students we to pick an object that meant something to us. It had to be pretty small and connect to us somehow. It could symbolize a memory or be literal but it had to connect to us and be of some importance. After we picked our object our next step was to think about how we would place that object in a vessel. We were supposed to think about how it would lay or stand in a box or in a bowl/container.
The vessel was not to be too big. There was a size restriction on it. The box could not be any bigger than eight inches in height, length, or width because the tools we were using could not go any higher than that. Also, our object was supposed to be fairly small so that size would be too big anyway.
After we decided on an object, we were to sketch and build prototypes along with doing mind-maps that would help us decide on a shape for our vessel. Once we had prototypes ready and done and we had decided on a specific box, our next step was to get the precise measurements for the box and get the wood we would make it out of.
After we purchased the wood, we were to use the ban saw, wood glue, and carpet tape to build our vessel. Once we had it built and glued together our next step was to document everything we did with photos and finish the box by sanding it down and making it look perfect.

Statement of Purpose

This project required me to think about something that has great importance to me. I have many of these objects in my life but a few stood out to me when I was thinking of which one to choose for this project. It had to be small enough to fit in this tiny box and still have a deeper meaning behind it in my opinion.
I finally ended up choosing a rose. About five years ago when my grandma died, all the grandkids were given a rose at her funeral because it was my grandma’s favorite. I was too young to understand the meaning of the flower and a couple days after the funeral I threw mine away. Years later when I was helping my sister move, I found my grandma’s rose in her things and immediately felt terrible for throwing it away. Throwing that rose away is probably the one thing I regret the most in my life.
For my box, I decided to build a box that could reflect the image of a rose. The shape is rounded at the top and the bottom tapers in to resemble a stem. The wood is a light color that takes after the yellow of the rose petals. Then on the top there are carvings of shapes that reflect the petals of the rose and then the stem of the rose.
